A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court (SC) demanding free access to education for the people as guaranteed by the Constitution.
Former general secretary of Nepal Students Union (NSU) Kundan Kafle has moved the SC on Monday invoking the fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution.
The petition names seven different government bodies including the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, federal parliament secretariat and Kathmandu Metropolitan City as the defendants, NSU leader Sushil Bhatta told Setopati.
The petition points that government and private schools have been arbitrarily charging fees despite the Constitution guaranteeing free education up to the basic level. The petition demands a judicial interpretation pointing that the general public may be deprived of education due to rising commercialization of education.
Hearing on the petition is scheduled for Friday.
