Convenor of Naya Shakti Party Nepal Baburam Bhattarai has accused the KP Sharma Oli government of moving toward autocracy.
Organizing a press conference in Kathmandu on Monday, former prime minister (PM) Bhattarai said PM Oli--who has already kept the Department of Money Laundering Investigation, the National Investigation Bureau, and the Department of Revenue Investigation under the Prime Minister's Office--has showed his ambition, arbitrariness and autocracy-oriented thinking by drafting a bill allowing him the direct authority for army mobilization undermining the National Security Council.
Bhattarai argued that the PM cannot concentrate unnecessary powers in him as per the constitution and the parliamentary system of governance. He added that the system of governance should be changed to allow a directly-elected executive and a fully-proportional parliament if PM Oli wishes to concentrate all the powers in him.
He claimed that the current government is continuation of the old intention and fate from the perspective of its vision, will power, managerial capacity and working style in its one year. "There is clear implication of the government in big irregularities and corruption like Ncell tax evasion, procurement of wide-body planes, and 33 kilograms of smuggled gold," he stated.
He said the party has concluded that the government has been a complete failure as it has failed to punish those involved in rape and murder of Nirmala Panta of Kanchanpur.
Naya Shakti has also taken exception to the PM calling CK Raut, who campaigned for secession in the past, a hero. "The so-called nationalist government can stage any kind of undignified and unbecoming drama to serve its interest has been proved. Our party is completely against such tendency," the party's statement reads.
The party has also demanded that the Tikapur incident be politically addressed and jailed lawmaker Resham Chaudhary be released.
