The State Affairs Committee of the parliament has prepared its report on the citizenship bill including a provision that a Nepali woman will have to divulge that the father of the kid is not known but need not prove that when applying for citizenship to the kid in her name.
Chairman of the committee Shashi Shrestha told Setopati that the Tuesday's meeting has prepared the report including the provision.
The women will still need to tell the officer that the father of the kid is not known even if they do not need to prove that the father is not known due to the provision.
This provision is discriminatory as a man need not tell even a word about the mother when going to the office to get a citizenship certificate for his kid.
The government seven months ago had sent the bill to the parliament prohibiting citizenship to the kid in the name of mother if the identity of the father is not known.
Many lawmakers lodged amendment proposal demanding there be no discrimination in the law about citizenship, and the identity of father not asked while granting citizenship in the name of mother.
Discussions were held in the committee for months and the lawmakers even asked for amendment of constitution to remove the discriminatory provision.
The committee has put the term description instead of verification in the bill after the opposition and discussions in the committee.
