The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has drawn the attention of Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli to the comments of Minister for Law Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sher Bahadur Tamang and a businessman about Nepali female students going to Bangladesh to study MBBS, and urged him to immediately control their expressions.
Issuing a press statement on Sunday, NC Spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma has called for control of their exceptionable comments. "The comments made without considering the chastity, and social dignity of our daughters who have studied and are studying in Bangladesh, and feelings of their families are condemnable and exceptionable," the statement reads. "The silence of PM when not just a businessman but even a Cabinet minister has made such comments is serious."
Speaking at a program organized by Practice International Academy in Chuchchepati in Kathmandu on Friday, Tamang had claimed that Nepali girls studying MBBS in Bangladesh have to sell themselves to get the certificate.
"I will now reveal a story. I have heard that our daughters who go to study in Bangladesh have to somehow sell themselves to get a certificate of doctor," Tamang said during the program. "We send our daughters abroad to study. But they can't acquire certificates there without yielding themselves."
NC has stated that NC is crestfallen at how the parents and family members of the female students have been hurt by the irresponsible comments. "Who will take action against the irresponsible comments made by a responsible minister when the PM himself makes cheap remarks from time to time?" the statement asks. "Reminding the PM of our culture that considers our daughters and women as goddesses, we urge the PM to immediately control such comments."
Minister Tamang earlier on Sunday apologized over his comments. "I must apologize to those who have been hurt by my comments," Minister Tamang told Setopati and added that the ministry will soon issue a statement with his apology.
