The Amnesty International South Asia, the International Commission of Jurists and the Human Rights Watch have said only the extension of the term of the two transitional justice commissions would not ensure justice to the conflict survivors.
A joint press release issued on Tuesday by these human rights organisations states that the conflict survivors could not get justice only with the extension of the term of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission on the Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons, the two transitional justice mechanisms.
The transitional justice could not be concluded merely by extending the term of the two commissions without amending the Acts related to these two mechanisms. Moreover, the orders issued by the Supreme Court and the United Nations regarding providing justice to the conflict survivors were not adequate, according to the joint press release.
The joint press release further states that there is doubt the survivors would get justice as the government has extended the term of both the commissions without amending the related Acts, and the conflict survivors have not been able to get the feel of justice despite the long period since the commissions were formed.
The government had, through an ordinance on January 19, made amendment to the Act with the provision that the two commissions could extend their term by one year if they wanted to.
