Nine ministers of CPN (Maoist Center) have finally resigned after remaining as ministers without any portfolio for almost three months.
Minister without portfolio Giriraj Mani Pokharel reached Singha Durbar to furnish the resignation letter to PM Deuba.
Earlier, the CPN (Maoist Center) on Thursday decided to take back its ministers from the government. However, the Maoist ministers could not tender their resignation on Thursday as it was a public holiday.
Prime Minister (PM) Sher Bahadur Deuba had taken back the ministries from the Maoist ministers on October 17, 2017 after Maoist Center forged an electoral alliance with CPN-UML for the federal and provincial elections.
But the ministers had refused to resign and been receiving all the perks and benefits of the position claiming that remaining in the Cabinet will guarantee election. They had continued to remain in the government even after the second and final round of election was held on December 7.
The party has decided to leave the government now only due to the compulsion of some of its ministers having to participate in provincial assembly meetings as provincial assembly members.
"We are resigning on the moral basis after Deuba does not seem to step down from PM post following the people's mandate," Pokharel said. "We thought not to rush for it first thinking that PM would step down on morality basis," he said, "But the PM has been delaying to resign. So we have resigned."
Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara, ministers Janardan Sharma, Tek Bahadur Basnet, Giriraj Mani Pokharel, Mahendra Bahadur Shahi, Shiva Kumar Mandal, Asha Koirala, Santa Kumar Tharu and Prabhu Sah, state ministers Mohammad Jakir Hussain, Raj Singh Yadav, Shyam Kumar Shrestha, Karna Bahadur BK, Cham Bahadur Gurung, Goma Kunwar and Ongdi Sherpa tendered the resignation.
