The government has declared 16 people who lost their lives at Chhintang of Dhankuta during the Panchayat period as martyrs.
The Cabinet meeting on Friday has decided to declare those killed on Kartik 27, 2036 B.S. as martyrs.
They were brutally killed by the police at Dhankuta's Chhintang that is deemed communists' stronghold. Most of the slain were the cadres of CPN (ML).
According to CPN (UML) leader Pradeep Gyawali, leaders including Madan Bhandari and Ashok Rai, among others, used to take shelter in Chhintang during their underground years.
"The then-government had killed some general public as well citing the increasing communists' effects on the public," Gyawali said, "It is a positive note that they are now declared martyrs."
