Nine ministers of CPN (Maoist Center) will finally resign after remaining as ministers without any portfolio for almost three months.
Prime Minister (PM) Sher Bahadur Deuba had taken back the ministries from the Maoist ministers on October 17, 2017 after Maoist Center forged electoral alliance with CPN-UML for the federal and provincial elections.
But the ministers had refused to resign and been receiving all the perks and benefits of the position claiming that remaining in the Cabinet will guarantee election. They had continued to remain in the government even after the second and final round of election was held on
December 7.
The party has decided to leave the government now only due to the compulsion of some of its ministers having to participate in provincial assembly meetings as provincial assembly members.
"It seems the provincial assembly meetings will soon be convened. Some ministers are member of the provincial assemblies. We are, therefore, going to resign," Maoist Minister Mahendra Bahadur Shahi told Setopati confirming that the party is quitting government. "We no longer need to remain in the government as the election of National Assembly has also been ensured," he argued.
Shahi himself is member of the provincial assembly in Province 6. He revealed that Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel will meet PM Deuba and hand over the letter informing about quitting the government.
