The government has selected 33 taxpayers through a lottery system for the taxpayer reward program from among those who paid taxes during the month of Bhadra (August 17 to September 16).
Of those selected, two winners will receive Rs 1 million each, while the other 31 winners will receive Rs 100,000 each.
The winners of the taxpayer rewards are generally selected through a fortnightly lottery. However, the regular process was disrupted by the flood that struck Rasuwa on August 26, prompting the authorities to conduct a single lottery for the entire month of Bhadra.
Two invoice numbers were selected for the Rs 1 million prize.
The selected numbers are 048 915 618 211 and 036 447 852 378.
Similarly, 31 invoice numbers were selected for the Rs 133,000 prize.
The Inland Revenue Department has been running the reward program to encourage taxpayers to always request invoices when making purchases.
According to the department, when consumers request invoices while purchasing goods or services, the transactions conducted by businesses are officially recorded, which also helps facilitate tax collection.
Janak Paudel, acting director general of the department, said that the taxpayer reward program has helped increase the tendency among consumers to request invoices.
According to him, the number of consumers asking for invoices when purchasing goods or services has been increasing recently.
Paudel said that the department is also taking steps to caution businesses that refuse or are reluctant to issue invoices when requested by consumers.
He said that the department is continuing monitoring and awareness campaigns to create an environment in which consumers request invoices and businesses are required to provide them.
The main objective of the taxpayer reward program is to increase consumer participation in the tax system and make business transactions more transparent.
The department expects that requiring businesses to record actual transactions when consumers request invoices will help control tax evasion and expand the tax base.
