Three people, including a former senior superintendent of the Armed Police Force, have been arrested on the charge of defrauding Chinese nationals held in the custody of the Department of Immigration by promising to secure their release.
On June 26, the Department of Immigration had taken nine Chinese nationals into custody from Sanepa, Lalitpur. They were detained for investigation after authorities found their activities suspicious.
According to SP Rameshwar Karki of the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Bikram Bahadur Thapa of Udayapur, Gopal Kumar Gurung of Nawalparasi West, and Narad Prasad Khatiwada of Sarlahi were arrested for allegedly taking Rs 900,000 by promising to secure the release of the nine Chinese nationals being held for investigation.
According to police, Gurung is a former SSP of the Armed Police Force, while Khatiwada is a comedy artist.
The three had met the victims and promised to secure their release. They had initially demanded Rs 7.2 million, promising both to secure their release and arrange 15 passports.
They later negotiated the amount down to Rs 900,000 and allegedly defrauded the victims.
The three have been handed over to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, for further investigation.
