The teachers' protest in Kathmandu, called by the Nepal Teachers' Federation (NTF) demanding the issuance of the School Education Act, entered its 28th day on Tuesday.
Although the government has been engaging in dialogue with the NTF’s negotiation team in the intervening period, no conclusion has been reached yet.
The teachers have been demanding the issuance of the School Education Act incorporating past agreements reached between the government and the NTF.
On Monday, Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Nepali Congress (NC) Vice-president Purna Bahadur Khadka, and NC General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma held discussions with the NTF’s representatives.
Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Raghuji Panta and the NTF’s negotiation team also held discussions late into the night.
Although the discussions were said to be positive, no conclusion has been reached yet. As a result, teachers continued their protests on the Maitighar-Baber Mahal- New Baneshwor road in Kathmandu on Tuesday.
NTF Chairman Laxmi Kishor Subedi said that various issues were discussed at the Ministry of Education on Monday night but no conclusion was reached.
Preparations are underway to continue talks on Tuesday.
The teachers' protest has affected student enrollment campaigns, SEE exam answer sheet evaluation, and Grade 12 examinations.
However, some local governments, including the Lalitpur Metropolitan City, have urged teachers and school managements to open schools and resume classes.
