The Supreme Court (SC) has sought documents related to tax evasion by Bhatbhateni supermarket.
Promoter of Bhatbhateni Min Bahadur Gurung had moved the SC after the Revenue Tribunal found him guilty of tax evasion.
A bench including Chief Justice (CJ) Cholendra Shumsher Rana has been hearing the case since February. CJ Rana constituted a joint bench including himself and Justice Sapana Malla on February 4 to hear the case. He kept another Justice Bam Kumar Shrestha for company in the hearing conducted on April 22.
The hearing by CJ Rana and Shrestha continued on Monday and Tuesday after April 22, and the joint bench on Tuesday summoned the documents.
The case of Gurung's Bhatbhateni supermarket started a decade ago when the government probed tax evasion by different business houses including the supermarket.
The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) had said Bhatbhateni had avoided value-added tax (VAT) worth Rs 90 million by making fake bills and asked the supermarket chain to pay that. The IRD also levied fine and interest on the amount.
Gurung appealed the decision with the IRD director general (DG) but the DG also ruled against him. Gurung then moved the Revenue Tribunal against that decision but the tribunal also found Gurung guilty.
Gurung then moved the SC to appeal against the Revenue Tribunal ruling.
