Police have arrested the main suspect involved in the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in the central Punjab province of Pakistan, Al Jazeera reported citing a police official.
Zainab Ansari was found dead in a rubbish dump on January 9 in Kasur, several days of her disappearance. An autopsy revealed she had been raped and strangled to death.
"The suspect's name is Imran and he lives in the same [area] where Zainab lived," a police district official confirmed to Al Jazeera on Tuesday.
The suspect has confessed, the official said.
"He was arrested before, but was released as we did not have evidence. After that he shaved his beard off so that no one could recognize him."
Her rape and murder had angered the whole Pakistan and there were demonstrations across the country with many of them turning into violent clashes with police and resulting into death of a few.
The girl went missing while going to a nearby home for Quranic studies. Her parents were away at a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia at the time.
