8.2-magnitude quake hits southeast of Alaska, prompting tsunami warning

An earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale jolted 278 km southeast of Kodiak, Alaska, at 0931 GMT on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 55.955 degrees north latitude and 149.227 degrees west longitude. The quake prompted a tsunami warning for parts of Alaska and Canada and a tsunami watch for the entire U.S. west coast, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System said.
