The community schools in Kanchanpur district have been closed for three days from today due to the increasing cold conditions.
A meeting held at the District Education Office took the decision to this effect considering the extremely cold condition in which it would be difficult to run classes.
The District Education Officer Amar Prasad Bhatta said that they decided to give a three-day holiday to community schools as it became difficult to send children to schools due to the excessive cold. "The condition is such that we have to take classes by lighting fire in classrooms," he added.
Meanwhile, normal life in the far-western tarai districts including Kanchanpur has been affected due to the excessive cold triggered by a cold snap.
The landless squatters, people displaced from their dwellings due to the national park and the freed-Kamaiyas have been affected the most as they cannot afford to buy warm clothes and beddings due to their poor economic condition.
The number of people with complaints of cough and cold, fever, pneumonia and other respiratory conditions visiting the health posts has increased in the rural areas of the district.
Thick fog and smog accompanied by the cold wave have made matters worse. The transport service has been affected due to the dense fog.
The Shuklaphanta Municipality has made arrangements for distributing firewood and logs to burn fire at the main crossroads in the town from Monday following the increase in cold conditions.
