The Nepali Congress parliamentary party has decided to demand the formation of a high-level parliamentary committee to investigate allegations of collusion with middlemen to manipulate court cases.
A meeting of the parliamentary party held on Monday made the decision.
Chief Whip Basana Thapa said that the meeting also decided to urge the government to immediately convene sessions of both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly to facilitate the investigation.
She said that the alleged judicial fixing scandal has implicated the judiciary and even the head of government, raising doubts about whether an investigation conducted by government agencies would be impartial. The Nepali Congress therefore demands that a high-level investigation committee be formed by Parliament itself, she said.
The meeting also discussed the need to safeguard press freedom and preserve the independence and autonomy of the judiciary and constitutional bodies.
Lawmakers also reviewed the responsibilities assigned to them by the parliamentary party and assessed the extent to which those responsibilities had been carried out.
