The Parliamentary Hearing Committee is set to seek details from the Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport to determine whether Giri Bahadur Sunar, who has been recommended for appointment as Nepal’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, was previously deported from Germany.
The committee decided to look into the matter after receiving a complaint alleging that Sunar had been deported.
Sunar has also been accused of violence against a woman, issuing threats, and harassing a woman with whom he had previously been in a romantic relationship, even after their relationship ended.
According to the complainant, Sunar threatened the woman and her family. The complaint also alleges that he sent intimate photographs to the woman’s family.
The complainant stated that Sunar had apologized twice at the Lalitpur Police Office in connection with the incident. She reportedly submitted copies of documents related to his apologies and a subsequent settlement with the police, along with screenshots of messages related to the incident, to the committee.
On Monday, the committee summoned the complainant and held a closed-door discussion on the matter. Following the discussion, lawmakers from the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) themselves said that they were taking the issue seriously.
The committee is also preparing to seek details from Lalitpur Police to obtain further information about the incident.
Questions raised over political party affiliation
Another complaint has also been filed against Sunar. It alleges that Sunar is affiliated with the Hamro Nepal Party, which RSP lawmaker Khagendra Sunar had previously registered.
Arguing that a person appointed as an ambassador should not be affiliated with a political party, the complainant contends that Sunar is not eligible for the diplomatic post. A list of the Hamro Nepal Party’s central committee members was reportedly submitted as evidence.
The complaint also makes several allegations against lawmaker Khagendra Sunar. The complainant alleges that he collected money from various individuals and that the money was managed by Giri Bahadur Sunar.
The complaint further alleges that RSP lawmaker Khagendra Sunar and proposed ambassador Giri Bahadur Sunar received Rs 3.3 million during the promotion process for deputy inspector general (DIG) of police.
The complainant also alleges that Swami Anand Arun visited the ministry to lobby for Giri Bahadur Sunar’s nomination as ambassador. It is reported that photographs related to the claim were also submitted to the committee.
The Parliamentary Hearing Committee will make further decisions after obtaining details from the Immigration Office, police, and other relevant parties.
