Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said he is continuing efforts for broader unity within the party.
Speaking at the central committee meeting held at Sanepa on Thursday, Thapa said that the party should head into the 15th general convention in a united manner.
He appealed to former office-bearers, including outgoing president Sher Bahadur Deuba, to participate in the convention.
Thapa said that the party has already addressed most of the demands raised by outgoing acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka and leader Shekhar Koirala.
“Some colleagues have said that outgoing president Sher Bahadur Deuba should inaugurate the general convention. This would also be a matter of honor for us. It is my request too – come to the inauguration,” President Thapa said.
Under the party statute, Deuba is no longer eligible to contest for the presidency.
Leaders close to Deuba are also participating in Thursday’s central committee meeting.
Thapa said that the general convention cannot be postponed as the party is bound by its statute, the Constitution, and its decisions.
Ward-level conventions are scheduled for September 19 and 20, while the central general convention will be held from October 2 to 5 after conventions at various levels have been completed.
