The CPN-UML and the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) have reached an agreement with the CPN (Masal) to ensure continuity of the current provincial government in Lumbini.
UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, NCP Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal, and CPN (Masal) General Secretary Mohan Bikram Singh reached a two-point agreement on Wednesday.
According to an earlier agreement between the UML and the NCP, the chief minister of Lumbini will be from the UML.
Chet Narayan Acharya of the UML is currently the chief minister of Lumbini. The UML had already announced that it would continue the government under Acharya’s leadership.
The agreement with the CPN (Masal) was reached because the Acharya-led government needs the support of one more lawmaker to secure a majority. The CPN (Masal) has one member in the Lumbini Provincial Assembly.
The 83-member provincial assembly requires 42 votes for a majority.
UML has 29 members in the provincial assembly, while the NCP has 13, including the speaker. Since the speaker cannot vote except in the event of a tie, the government needs the support of one additional member to secure a majority.
Chief Minister Acharya is also preparing to seek a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly on August 17.
