The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Bagmati province parliamentary party has decided not to participate in the provincial government.
The CPN-UML and the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) had sought the RPP's support to form a new government. However, the RPP has decided not to join the government.
A meeting of the RPP Bagmati parliamentary party held on Thursday evening decided not to get involved in the mathematical maneuvering of the provincial government's power equation under the current political circumstances.
Twelve provincial lawmakers from the RPP participated in the meeting. They signed the parliamentary party's decision not to join the government.
The RPP central executive committee had also previously decided that the party would not join governments in the provinces. RPP spokesperson Mohan Shrestha said that the Bagmati parliamentary party has continued that decision.
The UML and NCP require two more lawmakers to secure a majority to form a new government in Bagmati. Following the RPP’s decision, forming a new government has become even more difficult for the UML and NCP.
Currently, the government in Bagmati is led by Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Indra Bahadur Baniya. The former ruling partner, UML, has already withdrawn its support to the chief minister. Consequently, Chief Minister Baniya must seek a vote of confidence.
