The central disciplinary committee of the Nepali Congress has decided to seek clarification from party leader Purna Bahadur Khadka.
According to committee coordinator Taraman Gurung, a meeting of the committee held on Wednesday in Sanepa decided to ask Khadka to furnish an explanation within seven days.
Khadka had repeatedly issued statements in his capacity as acting party president. Although the disciplinary committee had previously warned him not to issue statements in that capacity, he again released a statement on April 13.
Former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba had assigned Khadka the responsibility of acting president on October 14 last year. However, a special general convention held in January elected a new executive committee led by Gagan Thapa.
A petition filed by the Deuba faction challenging the legitimacy of that convention remains sub judice in the Supreme Court.
While the case is under consideration, Khadka continued issuing statements claiming he was still acting president.
However, the disciplinary committee stated that Khadka used a fake letterhead and falsely claimed a position he does not hold.
“According to the decision of the Nepali Congress central disciplinary committee dated April 1, 2026, a warning was issued once because it was wrong to issue an unauthorized statement in various media outlets and social media on March 28, 2026, by creating and using a fake letterhead of the Nepali Congress and claiming a party responsibility that one does not have,” the committee said.
Despite the warning from the disciplinary committee, on April 13, leader Khadka again issued a press statement using a fake letterhead of the Nepali Congress, mentioning responsibilities he does not hold, and claiming to hold party responsibility, the committee added.
“Since the act of issuing an unauthorized press statement on April 13, 2026, was found to be against the party’s statute, the committee has decided to issue a 7-day clarification notice as per Section 34(8)(d) of the Nepali Congress Statute 1960 (with amendments),” said disciplinary committee coordinator Gurung.
Additionally, the committee has decided to extend the deadline for filing complaints regarding disciplinary violations by party members in the context of the 2026 House of Representatives election, Gurung said. The deadline, which was until April 13, has now been extended until May 14. According to Gurung, complaints received after the extended deadline will not be entertained.
