CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress (NC) leader Ramesh Lekhak have been arrested. The government moved to detain both leaders Saturday following the Cabinet decision on Friday to implement the recommendations made by the Gen Z Movement Inquiry Commission.
At the time of the Gen Z Movement, Oli was serving as the prime minister, while Lekhak headed the Home Ministry.
In the wake of Oli’s arrest, UML convened an emergency meeting of its secretariat. The party is expected to make the decisions of this meeting public shortly. Meanwhile, UML leaders outside of the executive office-bearers have already begun protesting the move, labeling the chairman’s arrest as a clear act of political vendetta.
The grand old party, on the other hand, has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
The party has scheduled an orientation program for its newly elected lawmakers at the central office in Sanepa on Saturday. An office-bearer noted that the issue would likely be reviewed if it is raised during the session. "The orientation for MPs is scheduled for today. If the subject is brought up there, we will review the situation and make our position public," the official stated.
