The Election Commission has sought clarification from Asheshwar Yadav, the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal candidate for Siraha-3, who was arrested with cash during the election silence period.
Assistant Election Officer and registrar at the Siraha District Court, Bheshraj Bhattarai, said that Yadav has been asked to submit a written explanation within three days.
“The Election Commission has asked him for clarification,” he said.
Yadav, along with four others, was arrested on Tuesday night from the Nepal–India border area at Madar with Rs 487,000 in cash.
All five have been directed by the commission to provide satisfactory clarification within three days.
The recovered cash and the vehicle involved have been seized for the time being.
The arrests were made during a joint security check at around 12:30 a.m. at Shiva Chowk. Police detained candidate Yadav along with 32-year-old Shyam Kumar Yadav, 35-year-old Ram Pravesh Yadav, 40-year-old Baprendra Kumar Yadav of Laxmipur, Bishnupur-5, and 28-year-old driver Jitendra Kumar Mahato of Naraha-3.
They were traveling in a Scorpio vehicle bearing registration number Province 2-02-001 Cha 087.
