Durga Prasai, the coordinator of the Rastra, Rastriyata, Dharma, Sanskriti Tatha Nagarik Bachau Maha Abhiyan, has been arrested.
Police arrested Prasai on charges of spreading misleading information regarding the Election Commission’s decision to grant recognition to the special general convention of the Nepali Congress. Prasai had alleged that the commission had granted legitimacy to the special general convention faction in exchange for Rs 520 million.
According to Hari Bahadur Basnet, information officer of Kaski Police, Prasai was arrested from Airport Chowk in Pokhara on Monday.
Basnet said that preparations are underway to hand Prasai over to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police for investigation.
Prasai had claimed that a deal of Rs 520 million was made with the Election Commission to grant official recognition to Gagan Thapa, who was elected party president through the Nepali Congress special general convention.
Calling the allegation misleading, the Election Commission on Sunday wrote to the Cyber Bureau requesting an investigation against Prasai.
Police said that they are preparing to launch an investigation against Prasai after arresting him based on the commission’s complaint.
Prasai has been arrested and released multiple times on cybercrime charges in the past.
According to Superintendent of Police Pawan Bhattarai of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, Prasai is being brought to Kathmandu.
