Former home minister Ramesh Lekhak has said that it is his “legal and moral responsibility” to respond to questions raised about incidents that occurred during his tenure.
He said that, bearing this legal and moral responsibility, he appeared before the inquiry commission formed to probe the incidents of September 8 and 9 to give his statement on Monday.
The commission had prepared to record statements from then-prime minister KP Sharma Oli and then-home minister Lekhak as part of its investigation into the incidents of September 8 and 9. However, Oli has said that he will not give a statement to the commission.
Lekhak said that those in leadership positions must be accountable for questions raised while they are in public or governmental roles.
"I am present here with the belief that it is my legal and moral responsibility to provide information to the commission regarding the questions raised in the context of my time in public or governmental role," Lekhak said in his statement.
