The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact has been tabled in the House for ratification on Sunday.
Minister for Communication and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki tabled the MCC Compact on behalf of Finance Minister Janardan Sharma, who was on 'sick leave', amidst obstruction by the main opposition CPN-UML.
Speaking while tabling the MCC Compact Minister Karki stated that the US$ 500 million grant has been provided by America for transmission lines and upgradation of different roads.
The House meeting ended after Minister Karki tabled the MCC Compact and the next House meeting has been called for February 24 when the MCC Compact is expected to be discussed on the floor.
The MCC Compact was included in the schedule for House meeting after the meeting of business advisory committee held before the House meeting took a decision to that regard.
The meeting of top coalition leaders held earlier on Sunday agreed to table the MCC Compact in the House.
The then KP Sharma Oli government had registered a motion for ratification of the MCC Compact in the House in June 2019. But speakers Krishna Bahadur Mahara and then Agni Sapkota, both of whom won the last general election on Maoist ticket, did not allow tabling of the MCC Compact in the House even after registration of the motion due to internal dispute in the then ruling CPN.
All the parties in the ruling coalition agreed to table the MCC Compact in the House after a protracted dispute earlier Sunday. CPN (Maoist Center) finally agreed to table it concluding it alone cannot block it when all other parties in the coalition are ready.
Prime Minister (PM) Sher Bahadur Deuba had clearly told the coalition leaders that the coalition will end if it does not agree to table the MCC Compact.
