CPN leader and former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has expressed solidarity with 'Occupy Tundikhel'—the citizen campaign to free Tundikhel of encroachment.
Speaking with the campaigners on Sunday, Nepal stressed on the need for Tundikhel and other open spaces for environment of Kathmandu and disaster management.
"We must protect open spaces including Tundikhel. We should not allow construction of physical structures there. They must be made more beautiful," he opined. "The way buildings are being constructed, be it by the Nepal Army or the municipality, that is inappropriate. Bus park also should not be kept there. It must be preserved as an open space."
The campaign started by cognizant citizens to convert Tundikhel, that has long been encroached by different government bodies, an open public space has now entered the fifth week. The campaigners are meeting leaders of different political parties to brief about the importance of open space to earn political support for the campaign.
They have already met Nepali Congress (NC) leader including Prakash Man Singh, Bhimsen Das Pradhan and Navindra Raj Joshi.
They met Nepal on Sunday. "The campaign to make Tundikhel free of encroachment is very good. You all move forward with determination," he encouraged the campaigners.
