Chairman of Gaumukhi rural municipality in Pyuthan Bishnu Kumar Giri is in police custody on charge of polygyny.
His wife Sita KC had filed a complaint of polygamy against Giri on August 27. Giri, who won the election on Nepali Congress (NC) ticket, reported to the District Police Office after the complaint was lodged.
"Rural municipality chairman is in police custody since Sunday," DSP with Pyuthan Police Narendra Karki told Setopati. "He is a people's representative. He was apparently out of the district. He reported to the District Police Office on his own after the complaint was lodged."
Giri's second wife Asmita Budhathoki is also in police custody since September 6.
Giri will be jailed for one to five years and will be fined up to Rs 50,000 if the court finds him guilty of polygyny.
