Nepali Congress (NC) Vice-president Bimalendra Nidhi has said Nepal will not again become a Hindu state.
Addressing the press conference to announce national awareness campaign at the central office in Sanepa on Thursday, Nidhi clarified that the main opposition party is not in favor of Hindu state.
"The Constitution states secularism. NC took leadership in promulgating the Constitution," he reminded. "The state is secular and NC accepts it. Our four-star party flag includes religious freedom which means secularism."
He stated that the party will not accept reverting the country back to Hindu state. "As far as the issue of Hindu state it, the final thing is NC is not in favor of naming the country a Hindu state," Nidhi stressed in presence of general secretary Shashank Koirala who has demanded a plebiscite for Hindu state in the past.
The issue of Hindu state has been raised during the party's central committee meetings and even in the last mahasamiti meeting.
