The agent of contractor company in Sudan scam Shambhu Bharati has been arrested, verdict implementation division of the Supreme Court (SC) has confirmed.
Bharati was involved in supply of substandard armored personnel carrier for the Nepal Police team that was deployed in the UN peacekeeping mission in Sudan as formed police unit. The SC had found him guilty in the scam that put high-ranking police officers including former chiefs behind the bars.
The SC had sentenced Bharati, who was agent of contractor Assured Risk Company, for one year and fined him Rs 142 million ruling that there was corruption of Rs 284 million in the scam.
Former IGPs Om Bikram Rana, Hem Bahadur Gurung and Ramesh Chandra Thakuri were found guilty in the scam and jailed.
The then SC chief justice Sushila Karki and justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha in the verdict had commented that the whole nation had to bear the effects of the scam.
