Former attorney general Raman Shrestha has refused to chair the Truth and Reconciliation Commission offered by CPN Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
"I was offered the position of chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. But I have already replied saying I won't accept it," Shrestha told Setoapti. "Oli had earlier refused to make me chairman of the Nepal Bar Association. How can he accept to make me chairman of a commission about transitional justice?"
He added that he will not accept the position even if Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli were to agree now.
He pointed that he is unaware about any issue of transitional justice, and knows very well that he will fail if he takes up an issue that he does not know. "This is a totally new subject for me. I will have to read from the beginning and it eats up a lot of time. I have said I will not become chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. I have not even picked up the phone calls of leaders since Wednesday morning," he stressed.
The ruling CPN and the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) earlier on the day had agreed to make Shrestha chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
He stressed that he will not accept the decision taken by the leaders without even consulting him.
