Secretariat meeting of the ruling CPN has been stalled after Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli proposed to keep people's multiparty democracy as the party's guiding principle in the political document.
The secretariat meeting Saturday evening discussed the political document for about one and half hours. Chairman Oli had discussed the issue of political document with fellow Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal repeatedly in the past but it had not made it to the secretariat meeting.
"The atmosphere become heated after PM Oli proposed the political document be rewritten." a secretariat source told Setopati. "The two chairmen earlier had sort of agreed to make the political document public after some normal editing but PM suddenly proposed the political document be rewritten by people's multiparty democracy."
Ishwore Pokharel supported Oli's proposal in the meeting while General Secretary Bishnu Paudel did not speak openly on the issue of people's multiparty democracy even as he seemed to agree on the proposal to rewrite the document.
But Dahal said not change apart from some minor language editing should be made in the document that was already passed by the secretariat.
Senior leaders Madhav Kumar Nepal, Jhala Nath Khanal and Bam Dev Gautam supported Dahal but Ram Bahadur Thapa remained silent like always, according to a secretariat member.
The two chairmen had met twice before the latest round of secretariat meeting focusing on making the political document public. Oli seemed to agree on previous proposals by Dahal to end the confusion about the party's ideology by making the political document public.
A Baluwatar source confided that the secretariat meeting failed to reach any concrete decision on Saturday after the sudden proposal by Oli.
The political document, that had kept socialism-oriented people's democracy incorporating the people's multiparty democracy of the then CPN-UML and the people's democracy for the 21
st century of the then CPN (Maoist Center), is currently with Oli.
