District presidents of Nepali Congress (NC) have demanded revocation of the provision that allows automatic election of central committee members as general convention representatives.
The district presidents have opposed the provision that was kept in the party statute despite NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel during the recent mahasamiti meeting expressing commitment to ensure that all general convention representatives will have to be elected.
President of the party in Nuwakot Jagadishwore Narsingh KC told Setopati that 56 district presidents currently in the Kathmandu Valley have asked for revocation of the provision. They have warned of calling a special general convention if the provision is not revoked.
NC president and senior leaders during the closing session of mahasamiti meeting held from January 13-23 had expressed commitment to ensure that the provision allowing central members to automatically become general convention representatives will be revoked, and proportional and positive discrimination positions will not be repeated for a single individual as per the demands of mahasamiti members and district presidents.
"We have been baffled after knowing that the issue resolved by the mahasamiti meeting has been overruled by the central committee meeting. The official place to draft NC's statute is mahasamiti meeting and not central committee meeting," KC pointed.
The district presidents have accused the central committee of undermining the mahasamiti meeting and wishes of district presidents.
He stated that the party cadres enthusiastic after the mahasamiti meeting and the decisions taken during the meeting have again been deflated by the latest central committee meeting. "We demand that the decision that harms the party leadership and organization be reconsidered. We will be forced to take initiative for special general convention otherwise," he warned.
