The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee has continued deliberations on the bill to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act- 2063 BS (2006).
In today’s meeting of the committee, Nepali Congress lawmaker advised to incorporate the provision allowing the holder of Nepali citizenship to make correction in surname (if needed) within a year of its acquisition.
Sujata Pariyar, Uma Regmi and Dilendra Prasad Badu from the same party called for making the bill simpler so that it could ensure the easy way for mothers to pass the citizenship to their children.
CPN’s Rekha Sharma, Binda Pandey and Yasodha Subedi were of the view that birth certificates should be the base for citizenship instead of educational certificates. Committee President Shashi Shrestha was hopeful that the bill would come in such a way that it would enable the atmosphere to provide the citizenship in mother’s name in an easier way.
