Cholendra Shumsher Rana has been unanimously endorsed as the chief justice (CJ) on Tuesday. The parliamentary hearing committee has unanimously endorsed Rana after hearing his answers to the complaints against him on Tuesday.
The parliamentary hearing committee had received several complaints against Rana. The committee on December 13 had invited complaints against Rana after the Constitutional Council recommended him for the post of CJ. He will now be appointed the 28th CJ and will remain at the office for three years.
The then CPN-UML and the Maoists, who have now unified to form CPN, had voted against Rana during the hearing to appoint him as SC justice. But all the lawmakers in the committee including those from CPN have unanimously endorsed Rana for CJ four years after voting against him during the hearing for SC justice.
The then UML lawmaker Ashta Laxmi Shakya during the hearing of Rana for SC justice on May 25, 2014 had asked him how many millions he spent to get recommended for the post. Rana in response had called the allegations baseless citing that one must carry the bribe of Rs 20 million in a tractor.
