The main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) on Friday reached an agreement to keep one president, two vice presidents, two general secretaries, seven joint general secretaries and a treasurer.
As per the agreement reached between the factions of NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel, all the office-bearers will be elected through the general convention except for the post of treasurer. The treasurer will be picked from among the elected central committee members by the central committee at the proposal of the president.
The central member Pradeep Paudel informed that the agreement reached between the top NC leaders is yet to be endorsed by the central committee. It will be included in the amended statute after being endorsed by the central committee.
One joint general secretary each will be elected from women, Madhesi, Janajati, Dalit, Khas-Arya, marginalized and disabled clusters. The party president could nominate one vice-president, one general secretary and one joint general secretary until now.
With this, NC will have 13 office-bearers. The central committee earlier did not endorse the agreement forwarded by the NC leaders to have eight office-bearers.
The mahasamiti meeting that was called for four days has been extended as the factions failed to agree on the number of office-bearers and president's rights, among others. The meeting that was stalled from Thursday evening will kick off Friday afternoon.
"The central working committee meeting will kick off shortly and the party statute will be sent for publication once the agreement is endorsed," central member Paudel said.
