The student unions close to the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) on Thursday have called for resignation of IGP Sarbendra Khanal.
The All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNISU) and All Nepal National Independent Students Union (Revolutionary) ANNISU (R) submitted a memorandum letter to Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa on Thursday and demanded immediate suspension of IGP for failing to provide security to general public.
ANNFSU President Nabina Lama, who is also a House of Representatives (HoR) member, and President of ANNISU (R) Ranjit Tamang signed the memorandum letter demanding those involved in rape and murderer of 13-year-old Nirmala Panta of Bhimdutta in Kanchanpur be brought to book.
The student unions also demanded that the report prepared by the probe committee formed to investigate Nirmala Panta rape and murder case be made public. According to the vice president of ANNISU (R) Surendra Basnet, Home Minister Thapa committed to making the report public soon.
"The Cabinet formed the committee to know the facts about Nirmala Panta rape and murder case. The committee report will be made public by the Cabinet meeting once PM KP Sharma Oli returns home from Costa Rica," Basnet told Setopati quoting Home Minister.
The student unions also expressed their dissatisfaction over hike in public transport fares on the eve of Dashain.
