The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has written to Nepal Police, directing that Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office chief SSP Santosh Khadka be presented before the commission.
The commission sent the letter to Nepal Police Headquarters in Naxal on Monday.
The letter was sent to seek clarification about why an NHRC team investigating the reported detention of former chief justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana was denied entry to the Crime Investigation Office.
“We have sent a letter to Nepal Police Headquarters in Naxal asking that he be presented before the commission tomorrow,” said Shyam Babu Kafle, joint spokesperson for the commission.
A team from the Crime Investigation Office took Rana into custody from his residence in Bansbari around midnight, citing a security threat. Police brought him to the office at around 3 a.m. on Sunday.
After learning that Rana had been detained, an NHRC team visited to the office. Commission officials also contacted Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki by phone and text message.
Despite this, the NHRC team was not allowed to enter the office. The team waited outside for around 35 minutes before leaving.
