The bodies of 1,410 people who died in the Bhotekoshi flood have been recovered, while 5,145 others are still missing, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported.
According to the details released by the authority, as of 7 p.m. Thursday, the recovered bodies include 364 in Chitwan, 232 in East Nawalparasi, 222 in West Nawalparasi, 203 in Nuwakot, 199 in Rasuwa, 78 in Gorkha, 72 in Dhading, and 38 in Tanahun.
Of the recovered bodies, 110 have so far been identified.
The authority said that procedures including DNA testing have been initiated to identify the bodies that remain unidentified.
According to NDRRMA spokesperson Shanti Mahat, 13,756 people have been rescued so far following the flood.
Among those rescued and staying at 27 different holding centers, 832 are in Nuwakot, 817 in Rasuwa, and 94 in Dhading.
DNA samples have been collected from 1,286 people who died in the flood and 1,944 relatives of the deceased. The authority said that efforts are underway to identify the remaining unidentified bodies based on the collected DNA samples.
Various state agencies have continued relief and management efforts to provide displaced and affected people with safe shelter and meet their basic needs.
Security agencies, local governments, and various government and non-government organizations are actively involved in searching for missing people, rescuing and treating the injured, and managing relief efforts.
Following the massive loss of life and property caused by flooding in the Bhotekoshi River, the search for people who remain missing has been given priority, the authority said.
Search and rescue operations for those still missing have been intensified.
