The bodies of five climbers who went missing while attempting to summit Yalung Ri in Dolakha have been found nine months after they were caught in an avalanche.
The five had gone missing in an avalanche on November 3 last year while climbing Yalung Ri in the Rolwaling region in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-9, Dolakha.
According to Inspector Santosh Kumar Khadka, information officer at the District Police Office, Dolakha, the bodies were found on Friday. However, due to adverse weather conditions, they were brought down from the mountain only on Monday.
Two of the bodies were flown to Kathmandu by helicopter on Monday, Inspector Khadka said.
According to Khadka, two of the deceased were Nepali nationals: Padam Tamang of Gaurishankar Rural Municipality in Dolakha and Mere Karki of Solukhumbu. The other three were foreign nationals – one each from Canada, Italy, and Germany.
A 15-member team comprising Nepali and foreign climbers had gone to the mountain for an expedition in November last year when they were caught in the avalanche.
Eight members of the team were rescued safely at the time, while the bodies of two others were recovered. The two who were found dead were French and Italian nationals.
The remaining five climbers had been missing since the incident.
Dream Destination, the company managing the expedition, had been conducting search operations in the area periodically. The five bodies were found during one such search operation on Friday.
