The body of world-renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja, who died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range, has been recovered.
Purja went missing after being caught in an avalanche while climbing the mountain on Thursday and was found dead on Saturday.
The BBC reported, citing the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), a leading mountaineering organization in the country, that his body could be retrieved only on Sunday due to adverse weather conditions.
The ACP said that Purja’s body was found at an altitude of 5,700 meters. Preparations are underway to bring his body to the Japanese Camp from the site on Sunday itself.
The BBC reported that the bodies of three other climbers were also found near Purja’s body. However, their identities among the 10 climbers who died in the incident have yet to be confirmed.
The ACP said that the rescue operation was extremely challenging due to difficult terrain, a high risk of further avalanches, and steep cliffs.
The Pakistani online newspaper Dawn reported that helicopters could not be deployed because of bad weather. An eight-member rescue team from Pakistan and Nepal reached Camp 1 before 9 a.m. on Sunday and attempted to recover the bodies, according to Dawn.
