A five-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the death of a person who was shot in Sunsari district.
Joint Secretary Ananda Kafle, spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs, said that the committee is headed by the ministry’s Joint Secretary Bhupendra Thapa.
According to Kafle, the committee has been given seven working days to determine the facts surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the Central Security Committee has been called for 5 p.m. on Monday to discuss the same issue.
A young man was killed after being hit by police fire during a dispute and clash between two groups in Kaptangunj, Sunsari. More than a dozen people were injured in the incident.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Chandra Bahadur Khadka, spokesperson for Sunsari Police, 24-year-old Om Prakash Mehta of Dewangunj Rural Municipality-3 died after being hit by police fire while officers were trying to control the crowd.
According to police, one group was preparing to travel toward the Saptakoshi River for a Bol Bam pilgrimage on the occasion of Saune Somwar while playing loud music on a DJ system at night.
After another group objected, saying that the loud noise was causing unnecessary disturbance at midnight, an argument broke out between the two groups, leading to a clash.
As the clash escalated, police initially fired tear gas to bring the situation under control.
Police claimed that they were forced to open fire after the situation failed to return to normal even after warning shots were fired into the air.
Following the incident, Chief District Officer Basudev Ghimire issued an indefinite curfew order, effective from 7 a.m.
According to a notice issued by CDO Ghimire, the curfew has been imposed until further notice in Harinagara Bazaar, Bhutaha Bazaar, Kaptangunj Bazaar, Ghuski Bazaar, and Dewangunj Bazaar.
In Harinagara Bazaar, the curfew area is bounded by Nuniya Tol to the east, Khuniya Dhar to the west, the Harinagar Rural Municipality office to the north, and Basantapur Mode to the south.
In the Bhutaha Bazaar area, the boundaries are Moriya Dhar Khola to the east, the Idgah field to the west, the Sunsari River to the north, and the Harinagar Rural Municipality office to the south.
In Kaptangunj Bazaar, the boundaries are Yadav Tole to the east, Panchaun Simal Secondary School to the west, Krishna Secondary School to the north, and the Nepal-India border area to the south.
In Ghuski Bazaar, the boundaries are Kasamiya Madrasa to the east, the Ghuski Police Post to the west, Isha Hardware to the north, and Hilal Public School to the south.
In Dewanganj Bazaar, the boundaries are Mushahar Tole along the road to Biratnagar to the east, Moriya Khola to the west, Chiura Mill to the north, and the rural municipality office to the south.
CDO Ghimire said that the indefinite curfew order prohibits movement, gatherings, processions, demonstrations, assemblies, and meetings within the designated areas until further notice. The notice also states that anyone violating the curfew could face a fine of Rs 1,000 and imprisonment for up to one month.
