The Nepali New Year 2083 began on Tuesday.
The year 2082 was certainly not an ordinary one. It was a year of massive upheavals across social, political, and economic sectors.
Politically, 2082 served as a major watershed moment. The Gen Z movement didn't just displace traditional powers like the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML; it laid the foundation for an election where the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) secured a nearly two-thirds majority.
This uprising brought a new dimension to political movements, catapulting youth into the halls of Parliament and power. Currently, 36-year-old Balendra Shah holds the country's reins. Youth participation in Parliament is encouraging, with a significant number of ministers under the age of 40 in the Cabinet.
While 2082 was politically turbulent, there were also many memorable and tragic events in other sectors.
Although the Gen Z movement changed the political landscape, it caused significant damage to the economy. Several businesses and industries, including Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket, were destroyed. The destruction on September 9 affected Bhat-Bhateni the most, though it also recovered the fastest, with many fire-damaged outlets already back in operation.
Like previous years, the year 2082 also witnessed tragic road accidents. The Dhading bus accident in particular was an unforgettable tragedy. In the accident at Charaundi, 19 people, including 3 foreigners, lost their lives.
In sports, the Tribhuvan University Cricket Stadium was finally equipped with floodlights, allowing Nepalis to enjoy cricket at night for the first time. The arrival of world-renowned athletes added to the excitement.
The visit of legendary Brazilian footballer Roberto Carlos helped promote Nepal internationally. He was brought to Nepal for the Nepal Super League.
Economically, the year was not very remarkable. The already weakened private sector was further hit by the Gen Z movement. This year, Biswo Paudel was appointed as the new governor of Nepal Rastra Bank.
The Madhesh region suffered from severe drought this year, with cracked fields where paddy crops should have been lush and green.
Meanwhile, floods in Rasuwa caused massive destruction and led to the closure of the border with China for a long period. Hundreds of vehicles were swept away or buried.
In entertainment, artists from India like Nora Fatehi, Sanjay Dutt, and Sonu Nigam heated up Kathmandu.
Meanwhile, Nepali citizen Bipin Joshi lost his life in an attack by Hamas in Israel. He had been held hostage for a long time and died in captivity. His body was brought back to Nepal and cremated with national honors.
