Durga Prasai, the coordinator of the Rastra, Rastriyata, Dharma, Sanskriti Tatha Nagarik Bachau Maha Abhiyan, has been arrested.
Police arrested Prasai on Friday afternoon from Chalnakhel, Kathmandu.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Prabin Dhital of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Rani Pokhari, Prasai has been taken into custody.
Dhital said that a complaint was filed against Prasai at the Cyber Bureau.
“He was arrested after a complaint was registered against him at the Cyber Bureau,” SSP Dhital said.
Superintendent of Police Deepak Raj Awasthi, spokesperson for the Cyber Bureau, said that Prasai was arrested after a letter was received from the Election Commission.
“The Election Commission had corresponded with us regarding the implementation of the election code of conduct. We have brought him in for questioning in connection with that matter, and we are reviewing what legal provisions apply,” he said.
The Election Commission had written to the police stating that Prasai committed offenses contrary to Section 4 (b) of the House of Representatives Member Election Act and under Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act.
Section 4 (b) of the House of Representatives Member Election Act states: “No act shall be carried out that obstructs election management, voter education, or other programs conducted by the commission, nor shall election-related materials or information be distorted, altered, or caused to be altered in any manner.”
Prasai has been arrested and released multiple times in the past.
