The detainee who had escaped from the Kathmandu District Court has been apprehended.
Around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, 21-year-old Dasharath Shahi, also known as Nirajan Thakuri, had escaped from the Kathmandu District Court.
Police arrested him around 5 p.m. from the mall area at Gongabu Bus Park, according to Superintendent of Police Apil Raj Bohara of the District Police Range, Kathmandu.
“Shahi, who had fled with handcuffs, has been apprehended,” Bohara said.
Shahi, originally from West Rukum and residing in Gongabu, was arrested on theft charges by the Sohrakhutte Police Circle on June 3.
After completing their investigation, the police took him to the district court for a bail hearing on Sunday. SP Bohara said that the hearing was ongoing at Bench No. 4 on the first floor of the court.
“Handcuffs are not allowed inside the courtroom. He was taken to the toilet with one hand cuffed after he said he needed to urinate,” Bohara explained. “He then jumped out of a window with the handcuffs and fled.”
According to Bohara, after jumping from the window, Shahi removed his jacket to conceal the handcuffs. He then escaped by hiring a ride-sharing driver to take him to the bus park, Bohara added.
It remains unclear where Shahi intended to flee from the bus park.
