The Supreme Court has acquitted Nepali Congress leader Ganesh Lama in a money laundering case.
Overturning the Special Court’s conviction, a bench of Justices Kumar Regmi and Abdul Aziz Musalman on Monday cleared Lama of money laundering charges.
On May 19, 2013, the Department of Money Laundering Investigation had filed a case against Lama at the Special Court.
On August 9, 2018, a bench of Special Court Judges Baburam Regmi, Dwarika Man Joshi, and Ratna Bahadur Bagchand convicted Lama in the case and sentenced him to one year in prison.
The court also fined him Rs 14 million and ordered the confiscation of his property.
Lama appealed against the verdict in the Supreme Court on October 26, 2018, naming the Nepal government as the defendant. The government also filed an appeal against Lama on December 24 that year.
The Supreme Court’s website mentions that the decision was reversed in the appeal filed by Lama, while the government’s appeal was deemed “insufficient.”
Lama is currently a central committee member of the Nepali Congress.
