The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the parliament will discuss the corruption complaint against former Nepal Army (NA) chief Rajendra Chhetri accusing him of amassing wealth illegally while serving in the army.
The committee in October 2019 had formed a task force under CPN lawmaker Rekha Sharma to collect brief details about complaints against Chhetri and conduct hearing on them. CPN lawmaker Navaraj Silwal and Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Dilendra Badu were the other members in the task force.
The task force after hearing on the complaints has recommended the committee to write to the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and the Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DMLI) to investigate and report that to the committee.
Former NA chief Chhetri has been accused of irregularities during construction of the NA headquarters and the Kathmandu-Tarai Fast Track.
CPN lawmaker and member of the committee Jhapat Rawal confirmed with Setopati that the complaints against former NA chief Chhetri will be discussed in the committee. "Former NA chief may well be innocent but the facts should be uncovered," Rawal stated. "We will call the bodies under us to discuss the issue."
NC lawmaker and member of the committee Amresh Kumar Singh had demanded that corruption inside the army be investigated. He had demanded that the committee called the CIAA and DMLI and instruct them to investigate former NA chief Chhetri.
