The Supreme Court (SC) has sentenced Sagar Bhatta and Amar Awasthi for 11 and a half years for raping Pooja Bohara who had gone to Patan Bazar of Baitadi to buy guess-papers.
A joint bench of Sapana Pradhan Malla and Hari Phuyal overturning the verdict of Mahendranagar High Court, that had acquitted the duo, has also ordered that Bohara be compensated with Rs 1 million, according to Deputy Spokesperson at the SC Devendra Raj Dhakal.
The SC has ruled that the two perpetrators pay Rs 250,000 each and the government Rs 500,000 in compensation to the victim. The bench has ruled that they be jailed for six and a half years for rape and another five years for gang-rape.
The Baitadi District Court had jailed the two for 13 years including eight years for rape and another five years for gang-rape, and ordered compensation of Rs 50,000.
The two then moved the then Mahendranagar Appellate Court that gave a clean chit to them.
Bohara, who had gone to appear SLC examinations at Sri Krishna Higher Secondary of Patan Bazar from Kailapal village in March 2012, was raped by Bhatta and Awasthi when she went to a local book store to buy guess-papers.
