The foreign ministers of Nepal and Brazil have exchanged congratulatory messages marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira exchanged congratulatory messages on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.
According to the Embassy of Nepal in Brasília, the two ministers expressed their commitment to elevating Nepal-Brazil cooperation and partnership to new heights during the exchange of messages.
They also emphasized expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest and further strengthening and deepening bilateral relations.
The foreign ministries of Nepal and Brazil are preparing for the upcoming meeting of the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM), which will be hosted by the Government of Nepal in Kathmandu. The two ministers also praised the role played by the diplomatic missions in the capitals of both countries in advancing a shared agenda.
In his message, Foreign Minister Khanal praised Brazil’s achievements in the social and economic sectors and appreciated its leadership on the climate change agenda. He also commended Brazil’s role in strengthening the voice of the Global South.
Minister Khanal expressed confidence that relations between Nepal and Brazil would continue to expand and strengthen on both bilateral and multilateral platforms. He emphasized the need to further enhance cooperation in climate adaptation and resilience, sustainable development, climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building.
“We will take Nepal-Brazil cooperation and partnership to greater heights,” he said.
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira also said that Nepal and Brazil enjoy a strong partnership based on friendship, mutual trust, and shared values.
He expressed satisfaction at the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Vieira cited a development project in Nepal’s dairy sector, being implemented with Brazilian assistance, as an example of cooperation between the two countries. The project is being carried out with support from Brazil’s cooperation agency.
He said that Nepal and Brazil are active voices of the Global South and noted that both countries are committed to multilateralism, a just and peaceful international order, and climate action.
Nepal and Brazil established diplomatic relations in 1976. Nepal established a residential embassy in Brasília, the capital of Brazil, in 2010. The embassy is Nepal’s only diplomatic mission in Latin America.
A year later, Brazil established its residential embassy in Kathmandu. Brazil’s embassy in Kathmandu is likewise the only Latin American diplomatic mission in Nepal.
The Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) is an important platform for discussions between the two countries on bilateral, regional, and multilateral issues. Its most recent meeting was held in Brasília in 2018.
