Nepali Congress leader and former minister Deepak Giri has been elected as a general convention representative from Dang Constituency No. 3. He secured 907 votes.
Among the candidates contesting the election for central general convention representatives in the open category, Suresh Hamal received the highest number of votes. There were 37 candidates competing for 10 seats, and Hamal received 916 votes. A total of 1,224 votes were cast in Wednesday’s election.
Hamal previously served as president of the Tulsipur Sub-metropolitan City chapter. He was the first leader in Dang to publicly support the special general convention held in January.
Hamal is a young leader who rose through the transport sector. He has served three consecutive terms in the leadership of Trisiddheshwari Rapti Yatayat Pvt Ltd and is a central advisor to the Federation of Public Transport Entrepreneurs.
Former central member Gehendra Giri and former district president Kirti Bahadur Khadka, among other leaders, did not contest the election. They are aligned with outgoing party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.
From the same constituency, Dang District President Shankar Prasad Dangi was also elected as a general convention representative in the open category with 735 votes.
Other elected representatives in the open category were Constituency No. 3 President Jagat Bahadur Khadka with 497 votes, former taekwondo player Jit Bahadur KC with 427 votes, Shantinagar Rural Municipality Chairman Pramod Basnet with 392 votes, businessman Janak Prasad Kharal with 380 votes, businessman Tek Prasad Basnet with 374 votes, Govinda Bahadur Shah (Shambhu) with 353 votes, former Free Student Union president of Rapti Babai Campus Anil Kumar Karki with 336 votes, and District Joint Secretary Subodh Kumar Dangi with 333 votes.
Constituent Assembly member Buddhiram Bhandari, who received 312 votes, and Constituency No. 3(A) President Devendra Kumar Rijal, who received 291 votes, were defeated in the open category.
Central member Keshav Raj Acharya and Nahakul KC were elected with 720 and 466 votes, respectively. KC is a former chairman of the Poverty Alleviation Commission and previously headed the Lumbini Province Development Authority when Dilli Bahadur Chaudhary was chief minister.
In the Khas Arya category, Mahadev Shah received 309 votes; among the youth candidates, Shishir Kumar Lamichhane received 288, Basanta Giri 206, and Dhruba Gautam 196, but none were elected.
In the young women’s category, Archana Regmi was elected with 446 votes, while Radhika Khadka received 335 and Luma Budha Magar 254.
In the open category for youth, Raghav Devkota and Pramod Bhandari were elected with 438 and 360 votes, respectively.
In the Dalit women’s category, Devika Nepali Ghimire was elected with 641 votes, while Bhumi Sunar received 290.
In the professional experts’ category, four candidates competed for one seat, with Mohan Lamsal winning with 387 votes.
In the persons with disabilities category, three candidates competed for one seat, with Ganesh Bahadur Khatri winning with 381 votes.
In the minority category, Aman Ullah Ansari (Aman) was elected with 587 votes, while his competitor Rishiraj Lahare (Arun) received 472.
In the Dalit category, Mohan Sunar was elected with 558 votes. Khemraj BK Senchuri received 314 votes and Chet Bahadur Sherpaili 191.
From the martyrs’ families category, Nabin Yogi was elected with 646 votes. Yogi’s father, Taranath Yogi, was abducted and shot dead by the then Maoists while he was observing the mourning of his father’s death.
Other candidates in the martyrs’ families category included Bhes Raj Dangi, who received 168 votes; Sushil Acharya (conflict-affected), 119; and Topendra Raj Regmi (youth), a democracy fighter, 118.
In the proportional representation category for Tharu women, Chetana Chaudhary was elected with 536 votes, while her competitor Keulapati Chaudhary (Kalpana) received 405.
Meanwhile, 10 women competed for four seats in the direct/open women’s category. Sushma Lamichhane Giri received the highest number of votes, with 646. Other elected candidates were Deva Dangi with 575, Sushma Chand with 506, and Parbati Pun with 458. Pima Wali Khadka, deputy chair of Dangisharan Rural Municipality, was defeated by a margin of seven votes.
In the proportional representation Dalit category, Jogendra Bahadur Sunar (BK) was elected with 398 votes, defeating three other candidates.
In the proportional representation indigenous nationalities category, Jai Bahadur Gharti Magar was elected with 600 votes, while his competitor Basanta Kumar Khadgi received 386.
Meanwhile, Khim Bahadur Wali was elected president of Nepali Congress Dang Constituency No. 3. Tej Bahadur Dangi was elected president of the 3(A) constituency, while Shambhu Giri, who is also chairman of Dangisharan Rural Municipality, was elected president of the 3(B) constituency.
